Independent Recording & Production Studio — St Margarets, SW London

Decatone is an independent recording, mixing and production studio in St Margarets, South West London, run by musician, producer and engineer Morgan Nicholls.

Professionally built and fully soundproofed, the studio was designed to be somewhere musicians can feel at home — a relaxed, creative environment with serious recording facilities, great equipment and none of the stuffiness of a traditional commercial studio.

The main acoustically treated tracking and mixing room looks through into a separate drum room / vocal booth, with additional microphone tie-lines running to our separate writing, rehearsal and hang-out room.

This means we can accommodate everything from vocals and overdubs to live bands, drums, acoustic sessions, pre-production, writing and smaller ensembles.

A Studio Run by a Musician

Decatone is owned and run by Morgan Nicholls, a musician, producer and engineer with more than three decades of professional recording and touring experience.

Morgan’s career has included extensive work with Muse, The Streets, The Who, Gorillaz, Senseless Things and Vent 414, alongside numerous recording, production, mixing, soundtrack and television projects.

That experience is at the heart of Decatone.

The aim isn’t simply to record what’s played into the microphones. Where wanted, Morgan can help with sounds, arrangements, performances and production — while equally being happy to leave a band completely alone to make the record they came in to make.

Third-party engineers and producers are always welcome too.

Recording at Decatone

Our recording setup combines carefully selected analogue equipment, microphones and instruments with a modern digital recording system centred around Logic Pro.

The studio collection includes high-end and vintage microphones, analogue outboard, valve equipment, tape, vintage keyboards, guitars, basses, drums, amplifiers and an extensive collection of effects and pedals.

Among the more unusual residents are our Hammond L100, Wunder CM7 valve microphone, modified BBC Reslo ribbon microphones, Brenell 1-inch tape machine, Silver Bullet analogue processor, vintage and prototype Orange amplification and a large collection of boutique  guitar pedals including complete collection from Lovetone .

We work with established artists, new bands, solo musicians, songwriters and young artists making their first recordings.

Decatone has also developed a close relationship with local music organisations KS Music and The Basement Door, supporting and recording young bands from across South West London.

Studio Rates

Recording / Tracking — from £300 per 8-hour day

Includes engineer and full use of the studio and writing/rehearsal room.

Discounted sessions are available for students and qualifying artists associated with KS Music and The Basement Door.

Mixing, mastering, production and longer projects are quoted individually.

And Yes — We Can Feed You

Recording days can be long, so freshly cooked homemade food and drinks can be provided during sessions for an additional charge.
